Officially founded by Weiyang Liu in 2025, Scalable Principles for Learning and Reasoning Lab (SphereLab) is affiliated with the Computer Science and Engineering Department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). We are physically located at the Ho Sin Hang Engineering Building (SHB) on the beautiful Shatin campus in Hong Kong.
SphereLab aims to advance the foundations and practice of machine learning and artificial intelligence. We are inspired by simple yet scalable first principles, striving to discover and harness them to design powerful learning and reasoning algorithms. Through such principled approaches, we aim to create AI systems that are data-efficient, scalable, generalizable, and trustworthy. Our recent research spans principled algorithms and systems for training large-scale foundation models, reliable reasoning in large language models, scalable generative modeling, and their applications in computer vision, natural language processing, and scientific discovery.
