About Us
Officially founded by Weiyang Liu in 2025, Scalable Principles for Learning and Reasoning Lab (SphereLab) is affiliated with the Computer Science and Engineering Department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). We are physically located at the Ho Sin Hang Engineering Building (SHB) on the beautiful Shatin campus in Hong Kong.
SphereLab aims to advance the foundations and practice of machine learning and artificial intelligence. We are inspired by simple yet scalable first principles, striving to discover and harness them to design powerful learning and reasoning algorithms. Through such principled approaches, we aim to create AI systems that are data-efficient, scalable, generalizable, and trustworthy. Our recent research spans principled algorithms and systems for training large-scale foundation models, reliable reasoning in large language models, scalable generative modeling, and their applications in computer vision, natural language processing, and scientific discovery.
Research Values
SphereLab always believes in two research principles: (i) insight must precede application, and (ii) everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler. Our core research values include:
- Focus on creating novel ideas, not publishing papers
- Follow curiosity and passion, not trends
- Ideas are not owned, but come with debts to those who came before
- Ideas become stronger when shared, discussed and criticized
- Life is surprisingly short, so solve problems that interest and excite you most
- It is good to be quick, but it is more important to be deep
- Think like an amateur, do as an expert
- This is not only about how to do research, but also how to live your life
